Punjab’s plan to introduce Artificial Intelligence as a subject for Grade 1 to Grade 5 students has been delayed because government primary schools do not have the computer labs and digital infrastructure required for implementation.
The proposed AI curriculum had reportedly been approved for the upcoming academic year, but the official notification has not yet been issued.
Textbook Printing Also Put on Hold
The delay may also affect the preparation and printing of AI textbooks. Without a formal notification, education authorities cannot move ahead with final book development and distribution.
Officials are now considering teaching basic AI concepts as a chapter within existing primary-level subjects instead of introducing a separate subject immediately.
This option could reduce implementation costs, as establishing dedicated computer or AI labs in thousands of government schools would require significant funding.
The Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority has said the matter remains under consideration and a formal decision will be announced after the implementation plan is finalized.
The delay highlights the infrastructure gap Punjab must address before introducing technology-based subjects across government primary schools.
