The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB) has approved a plan to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) education for students up to Grade 5 in schools across the province.
The initiative includes the development of a dedicated AI curriculum and the establishment of AI laboratories in primary schools as part of Punjab’s broader education modernization strategy.
AI to Become Part of Primary Education
Under the approved plan, AI education will be introduced for primary school students through a structured curriculum designed for children up to Grade 5.
Officials say the initiative aims to familiarize students with emerging technologies from an early age while helping them develop analytical and problem-solving skills.
AI Laboratories to Be Established
The provincial government also plans to establish modern AI and science laboratories in schools to support practical learning.
These laboratories will provide students with hands-on exposure to artificial intelligence concepts alongside science education.
Qualified Teachers to Be Hired
Officials acknowledged that most government schools currently lack teachers with specialized knowledge of artificial intelligence.
To address this gap, the province plans to recruit qualified educationists on a contract basis to teach the new subject and support the implementation of the curriculum.
Two-Phase Implementation Plan
The project will be introduced in two phases.
Phase One
The first phase will focus on:
- Introducing AI as a separate subject in the primary school curriculum.
- Developing and implementing the new curriculum.
Phase Two
The second phase will include:
- Establishing AI laboratories.
- Setting up modern science labs.
- Providing practical learning opportunities for students.
Backup Plan for Budget Constraints
Education officials have also prepared an alternative implementation strategy in case budget limitations delay the establishment of AI laboratories.
Under the contingency plan:
- Basic AI concepts will be incorporated into existing science textbooks.
- Students will still receive introductory AI education until dedicated laboratories can be developed.
Full Rollout Planned for 2027
According to officials, the curriculum is expected to receive final approval during the next meeting of the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board.
The province plans to fully implement the new AI education program during the 2027 academic year.
